5 Tips for Successfully Consigning Your Clothes in Denver

With years of experience consigning clothes and toys for clients in Denver, I’m excited to share this guide to help you master what to bring to our local consignment stores for success!

It is so important now more than ever to be consigning, recycling, and passing on our pre-loved items. In America alone, an estimated 11.3 million tons of textile waste – equivalent to 85% of all textiles – end up in landfills on a yearly basis. That’s equivalent to approximately 81.5 pounds (37 kilograms) per person per year and around 2,150 pieces per second countrywide. quoted from Earth.org

Here are my 5 rules to follow:

1. **Check What the Store is Looking For**:

Consignment stores usually have a section on their website that highlights what sells well for them. It's important to review these guidelines because what is trendy and in style for you may not align with their current offerings.

2. **Ensure Items are in Good Condition**:

Please avoid including clothes with holes, pit stains, pilling, broken zippers, or missing buttons. Look closely; if you don't, others will. The clothes must be in near-perfect condition.

3. **Consider the Current Season**:

Stores strategically focus on seasonal clothing to maximize their space. This makes perfect sense! For example, I store my son's winter clothes when I switch to summer gear and then love consigning them in the fall. It's a great way to make room for new items while being responsible.

4. **Clean and Fresh**:

Ensure that your clothes are clean and freshly washed. They will be inspected for cleanliness, so presenting them nicely increases the likelihood of acceptance.

5. **Avoid Garbage Bags**:

Use a reusable bag or box for transporting your clothes. Your reusable bag will be returned. Remember, presentation makes a difference!

Neatly fold the clean and washed clothes and put them in reusable bags.

There are consignment stores for all types of clothes. Some are specifically for luxury brands like Old Town Exchange in Aravda, some are for nice brands like Rags in Cherry Creek. Other cater to more retro clothes like Strawberry Mountain on Sante Fe drive. Look online to find the consignment store that works for your style.

And don’t forget to check if you need to make an appointment, how many items you can bring, and what you need to bring with you.

By following these tips, you'll be well on your way to a successful consignment experience!
